New Tools in Canvas

With summer quarter nearly upon us, Teaching & Learning Technologies is offering new tools for the upcoming academic year, including Perusall, Hypothesis, and Flipgrid. Each tool integrates with Canvas and is free for instructors and students.

Background

With Northwestern’s move to a remote teaching model for spring and summer quarters and remote learning options in the fall, Northwestern IT received some inquiries from instructors about the need for additional tools. Teaching & Learning Technologies took these requests to the LMS and Learning Apps Working Group as well as the CANDUITS group. After reviewing the recommendations, exploring select tools, obtaining pricing, and completing security and legal reviews, Teaching & Learning Technologies proceeded with adopting four new tools (please note that Nearpod is still under review and consideration for a limited pilot in the 2020-2021 academic year).

Perusall

Perusall is an annotation tool that integrates with Canvas. Perusall allows students and instructors to discuss, comment on, collaboratively mark up, and post questions on documents and textbooks. Students can take notes and answer each other’s questions directly within the text, while instructors can create assignments and groups.

Learn more about using Perusall in Canvas or add Perusall to your course.

Teaching & Learning Technologies has scheduled two Perusall webinars for instructors:

Hypothesis

Hypothesis enables students to collaboratively comment on or annotate online texts, such as webpages, online PDFs, digital articles, or even specific course files in Canvas.
