On July 16, 2021, the page formatting for Canvas assignments will display an updated interface. This change is primarily cosmetic and will be visible in all course sites.
For students, submitting an assignment retains the same functionality as before – the rich content editor is available for authoring content directly within Canvas and the file upload feature allows you to select a file from your computer to upload. Additionally, submissions can be drafted in the assignment without requiring an immediate submission, and each attempt is retained and viewable by both students and instructors.
The workflow for instructors building and evaluating assignments remains unchanged.
Updated Look of the Assignment Submission Page
When the update is made on July 16, the assignment submission screen will appear like the screenshot below. The highlighted sections correspond to a description found below the screenshot.
- The Assignment Summary header [1] displays the assignment title, due date, and points possible. Not all assignments have a due date.
- The Attempt drop-down [2] allows you to view submission attempts for the assignment. By default, the Attempt drop-down displays your most recent submission attempt.
- The Progress Tracker [3] displays the assignment submission and grading status.
- To view assignment feedback or add an assignment comment for your instructor, click the View Feedback button [4].
- View the number of allowed attempts [5] and availability dates [6].
- Any added assignment instructions display in the Details section [7].
- If a rubric was added to the assignment, view it by clicking the View Rubric link [8].
- If more than one option is enabled for an assignment, click on the Submission Type [9] you want to use for your submission.
Note on Group and Peer Review Assignments
The enhanced assignment view for students does not currently appear for group assignments or peer review assignments. For those assignment types, the view will revert to the previous default setting. There is no change in the submission workflow or availability of those assignment types for students and instructors.
