Starting Summer 2017, it will be easier to message a specific student in Canvas thanks to the new Student Context Cards feature. According to Canvas, “Student context cards provide insights and context about the student. Context cards are meant to be a simplified overview of a student’s progress. The context is generated from grades in the Gradebook and standard page view and participation activity in course analytics.”

Messaging a Student from People
- Within your Canvas course, select the People tab in the left navigation.
- Click on the name of the student you’d like to contact to bring up their context card.
- Click the email icon to the right of the student’s name to start writing a message to that student.
- In the new message pop-up window, compose and send your message to the student.
