Instructure, the makers of Canvas, have been working for some time on a new quizzing tool in Canvas. New Quizzes will include more question types and other features. As of August 12, you can choose to use New Quizzes in Canvas at Northwestern. Instructors may still continue to build and give quizzes within Classic Quizzes (what Instructure calls current Quizzes in Canvas) even after turning on New Quizzes within their course. It is not required that you use New Quizzes and you can still use Classic Quizzes in your courses. However, for anyone who would like to begin exploring the featuresof New Quizzes, it is now available for you in Canvas.

New Quizzes is a feature that Instructure has been working on for years now; please note that Instructure will be continuing to add to its feature set over the next year. New Quizzes offers many features and question types that Classic Quizzes does not, but it also does not currently have every feature that is available in Classic Quizzes. Right now it may be beneficial to use one over the other depending on the sort of quiz or exam one is giving.
ACTIVATING NEW QUIZZES
Because this is an optional feature, it is activated on a course-by-course basis. So before using it within a course, first go to Settings > Feature Options and then click the button in the New Quizzes area so it turns to a green checkmark. Then either New Quizzes or Classic Quizzes will be able to be used within that course.
Note: In our testing of New Quizzes with Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor, we noted that Respondus applications did not work properly when used on a quiz built in New Quizzes that is being taken on a tablet. At this time, we do not recommend that you use New Quizzes for any assessments where you are using Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor. We have reported this issue to Instructure and will update this information as a fix is put in place.
